Oolong tea

Oriental Beauty

Oriental Beauty – also known as Bai Hao Oolong – is a natural, highly oxidized oolong from Taiwan (Hsinchu & Miaoli). Picked in summer and influenced by cicada bites, it develops its honey and muscat grape aromas on the leaf even before processing begins. In the cup, it displays a luminous golden-amber color with a silky body, ripe stone fruit, and a clear, mineral finish.

AROMA & CHARACTER

Honey and muscat grape top notes, accompanied by ripe peach/apricot. Silky and mildly sweet on the palate, with delicate citrus/floral hints and a subtle spiciness emerging. Hardly any bitterness, minimal astringency. Subsequent infusions become calmer and more mineral, with a stable, honey-like sweetness that lingers.

The leaves are pierced before harvesting, which naturally creates the typical honey sweetness and fruity aroma.

60–80% oxidation brings depth like a black tea, but remains silky and clear in the aftertaste.

The sweetness remains present over several infusions, while fruit, blossom and spice gradually unfold.

THE TEA FARM

Cicada tea from Taiwan

Our Oriental Beauty tea comes from Taiwan (Hsinchu & Miaoli). The hilly, warm microclimate with frequent fog supports a clear sweetness and a clean, bright cup. Harvesting takes place in summer when the tea leafhoppers are active: their bites stimulate the plant to produce aromatic compounds that later become perceptible as honey and muscat grape notes.

The tea is processed at a high oxidation rate (approx. 60–80%), loosely rolled in strips, and barely roasted, if at all. After outdoor and indoor withering, as well as gentle shaking (yaoqing), the oxidation is stopped by fixing (shaqing), then carefully rolled and gently dried. This ensures the cup remains natural, honey-sweet, and precise, without any added flavoring.

TEA FARM

Selected from summer lots with clean leaves and controlled oxidation to ensure honey and fruit remain clear.

TERROIR

Warm hills, fog and good ventilation promote aromatic density and a bright, clear sweetness.

ORIGIN

Bai Hao Oolong is a style-defining Taiwanese classic, whose quality depends heavily on the season, insect activity and oxidation process.

The tea

Oriental Beauty

Oriental Beauty is a tea that unfolds its aroma in a series of infusions. The first infusions primarily deliver the intense, bright sweetness and the aromatic core. Then comes structure: the body becomes rounder, the fruitiness deepens, and a subtle spiciness begins to emerge. Because it is barely roasted, the flavor profile remains transparent – the depth arises from oxidation, not heat.

You can control its strength very precisely through temperature and brewing time. A slightly cooler and shorter brew emphasizes the floral honey sweetness and grape notes. With more time, stone fruit, spice, and a darker, warm honey tone become more pronounced. Over several infusions, it rarely turns bitter, but rather becomes increasingly mineral-sweet, with a long, smooth finish. When brewed as a cold brew, it comes across as particularly clear and fruit-forward.

What is special about Oriental Beauty?

Oriental Beauty is a high-quality, heavily oxidized oolong tea from Taiwan. Its unique characteristic: it is harvested exclusively in summer – when cicadas nibble on the young leaves.
